Family Activities & Hotel Packages

August 24, 2011 By admin

Jasper Alberta has plenty to offer for children of all ages, so if you are looking for a quick family friendly getaway before the kids go back to school, why not pay a visit to Jasper National Park and find out just how much fun you and your family can have in the stunning surroundings of the Canadian Rockies.

The Jasper Tramway is an excellent way to bring young children into the high alpine without having to hike up a mountain! The 7 minute guided journey in the aerial tramway involves an elevation gain of almost 1000m, allowing you to experience spectacular lake and mountain views normally reserved for mountaineers. The kids will also love spotting wildlife which can include hoary marmots, ptarmigan, ground squirrels, pikas, and big horn sheep. Washrooms and food are available at both the lower and upper stations.

Rafting on the Athabasca River is an activity the whole family can enjoy. Rocky Mountain River Guides offer 2 hour class II rafting trips which are suitable for all ages while still involving some exciting rapids, as well as 3 hour trips suitable for ages 6 and over.

According to Parks Canada, Jasper has what might be one of the world’s best bike trail systems, which includes a good range of short and easy bike routes, suitable for families with children. The Jasper Discovery Trail for instance is a smooth paved ride along Jasper’s historic rail corridor for 2.5 km one way with minimal elevation gain, and kids will love the undulating Athabasca River Trail which runs for 3 km one way from Old Fort Point to Jasper Park Lodge on the shores of Lac Beauvert. If you don’t bring your own bikes, they can be rented in town, and be sure to download the Jasper National Park Mountain Biking Guide before you head off!

All kids love to swim and splash around in water and there are two great places in Jasper where they can do just that! The Jasper Aquatic Centre has a 25m indoor pool plus a waterslide, as well as a shallow wading pool for the young kids, and if you prefer the outdoors, you can bathe in the naturally heated waters of Miette Hot Springs, suitable for all ages.

If you are looking for a family hotel package which includes your Jasper hotel plus one or more family activities, there are several options available on the new Jasper4Kids website, where you will also find more ideas and recommendations for having fun with your family in Jasper National Park.

David Thompson Bicentennial

July 25, 2011 By admin

Two hundred years ago, in 1811, the explorer, cartographer, fur trader, and naturalist David Thompson travelled through the Athabasca Pass, essentially putting the Jasper area on the map and paving the way for millions of visitors and tourists who would visit Jasper National Park over the following 2 centuries.
To commemorate the David Thompson Bi-Centennial, throughout 2011 there are various events taking place in the Jasper area, some of which we have featured below:

From May 6 to September 25 2011, the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives will be hosting the exhibition David Thompson: A Legacy of Art, featuring works of various artists, including sketches and a map by David Thompson himself.

From June 24 to September 4 2011, interpretations of David Thompson’s explorations will be shown as part of the Theatre Program at Whistlers Campground each Tuesday at 9pm.

On Thursday August 18 2011 the Pelts and Paddles Rendezvous is an all day festival taking place at the Jasper Airfield Picnic Site from 11am to 6pm. Take the free shuttle from the Jasper Information Centre and enjoy a whole host of fun and interesting activities on offer throughout the day, including hay wagon rides, trappers’ activities and games, David Thompson’s Amazing Race, horse packing demonstrations, barbecue and beer garden.

Friday August 19 2011 sees the Watch the Brigade! event at Jasper Airfield at 8am, where several crews will be departing in traditional canoes on a historial 3 day voyage on the Athabasca River.

Hotel Vacancies for Labour Day Weekend

August 30, 2010 By admin

**Please note that the information below was relevant to last year 2010 and is no longer current. To check availability for September 2011, please click here and enter your travel dates in the hotel search box.**

September long weekend is almost upon us, and not surprisingly it is difficult to find a hotel room in Jasper, particularly for Saturday night, September 4. If you are planning to spend the Labour Day weekend in Jasper and you still need to book your room, you will need to act quickly to avoid disappointment. At the time of writing the following accommodations were still showing availability for both Saturday and Sunday nights:

Amethyst Lodge has availability for a minimum two night stay in a standard room, at an average nightly rate of $169.50 plus applicable taxes for Saturday and Sunday nights. To check availability at this hotel, click here.

Chateau Jasper is showing vacancies for a minimum two night stay, at a rate of $195.00 per night plus tax for Saturday and Sunday nights. To check availability at this hotel, click here.

Whistler’s Inn is still showing availability for both Saturday September 4 and Sunday September 5 at a rate of $225.33 per night plus tax for a standard room with queen bed. To check availability at this hotel, click here.

If you only need a room for either the Friday or Sunday night, you will have more hotels to choose from, and I recommend taking a look at our main Jasper hotels page, by clicking here.

Another option if you can’t find what you are looking for in Jasper, is to consider a hotel in Hinton, which lies just 15km from Jasper National Park, and an 80km scenic drive from the Jasper town site. With lower rates and a good chance of finding a vacancy, Hinton is a reasonable alternative to Jasper, particularly on a busy holiday weekend. To see a list of hotels in Hinton, click here.

*In most cases the above rates are subject to all applicable taxes and are based on double occupancy. The information above was accurate at the time of writing, however the availability and rates are likely to change as the weekend approaches. For up to date information, please check availability and rates yourself using the links provided.

Spring Hotel Deals in Jasper

May 11, 2010 By admin

Spring is a wonderful time to visit Jasper and the Canadian Rockies. The mountain peaks are still covered with snow, and for many people the views are more impressive than during the summer. Most summer tours and activities are already up and running, yet the roads and sidewalks are still nice and quiet. And best of all, being low season, hotel rates are generally more affordable in May and early June than during the busier summer months. If you plan to visit Jasper during springtime, you should take a look at some of the special offers we found at various Jasper accommodations:

Maligne Lodge has a bed and breakfast special from May 1 to 31 starting at $67 per person for one night’s accommodation plus breakfast the following morning. A similar B&B package at their sister property, the Tonquin Inn, starts at $72.50 per person, again valid for the month of May.
Mount Robson Inn is offering a May special, whereby the 2nd night of a 2 night stay is given at a 40% discount. This offer applies to any room type throughout May, except for the long weekend of May 21st, 22nd and 23rd.
The Alpine Bed & Breakfast Package at Best Western Jasper Inn & Suites starts at $79 per person for a standard room. This offer is valid until May 31st and includes one night’s lodging, a buffet breakfast, plus a $15 food credit, and the package can be upgraded to include a studio, or a one or two bedroom suite.
For the cabin experience, Pocahontas Cabins has a Soak & Sun package which includes cabin accommodation for one night, a hot breakfast, and a free pass to Miette Hotsprings. From May 7 to May 31 the package starts at $109 per person.
If you are looking for a cheap hotel deal, it’s hard to beat the Spring B&B Special at the Astoria Hotel which comes in at just $44 per person in a twin standard room or $49 per person in a queen standard room, and is valid until May 20th.

If your trip to Jasper is part of a tour of the Canadian Rockies, and you need to find a hotel in Banff, you might also want to check out the hotel deals over at Banff Hotels.org.

*The above offers are based on double occupancy, and are subject to availability, subject to taxes, subject to change, and certain date restrictions may apply. To confirm full details and for reservations, please contact the relevant Jasper hotel directly.

Jasper Hotel & Spa Packages

May 5, 2010 By admin

What better way to relax in the Canadian Rockies than to combine a visit to Jasper National Park with a well deserved spa treatment and if you’d like to have all the arrangements taken care of before you arrive, one of the following spa & hotel packages may be just what you are looking for:

The Sawridge Inn offers the Escape Spa Package, which includes 2 nights hotel accommodation with breakfast plus a spa treatment at Mountain Wellness Day Spa, conveniently located on-site at the Sawridge Inn. Choose between the Classic Facial, the Relaxation Massage, or the Wellness Soak. From May 1 to June 15, and for the month of October 2010 the package costs $276 per person based on double occupancy and from June 16 to Sept 30 the cost is $336 per person.
For a shorter stay, Mountain Park Lodges offer a spa package with one night’s accommodation, breakfast, plus a choice between the Relaxation Massage, the Classic Facial or the Spa Pedicure, again at Mountain Wellness Day Spa. Rates start at $174.50 per person during May 2010 and go up to $210.50 from June 1st to Sept 30th, and are based on double occupancy in a standard room at Marmot Lodge. The package is also available at other Mountain Park Lodge properties at different price points.
No discussion of Jasper spas would be complete without mention of the Spa & Health Club at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. In August 2010, their new $6.7 million Fairmont Spa will be unveiled, which by all accounts will be yet another world class spa facility at a Fairmont Hotel. In the meantime, guests can still enjoy the outdoor heated swimming pool and gym, and a full range of spa treatments are offered at the hotel by the Insignia Salon & Spa.
If you would like to spa in Jasper, and stay at a different hotel to those mentioned above, there is nothing stopping you from putting together your own spa package by combining a stay at any hotel in Jasper with a spa treatment of your choosing.

*The above offers are subject to availability, subject to taxes, subject to change, and certain date restrictions may apply. To confirm full details and for reservations, please contact your Jasper hotel directly.

Ski Jasper at Marmot Basin

January 27, 2010 By admin

One of the main reasons for people to visit Jasper during the winter is to take advantage of the fantastic skiing and snowboarding at Jasper’s own ski resort, Marmot Basin, just 20 minutes from downtown.
Although not quite as well known as the ski resorts in Banff National Park, Marmot Basin holds its own on the international stage, and has a loyal following of skiers and snowboarders who return year after year to take advantage of the uncrowded slopes, varied terrain, and the pristine wilderness of Jasper National Park.
Marmot Basin’s 86 trails offer an even distribution of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain, making it a perfect ski destination for a mixed ability family or group of friends who may wish to ski different runs but still easily meet for coffee, lunch or even ride the same chairlifts.

Beginner to novice skiers and boarders will enjoy the gentle wide green runs from the School House T Bar or the longer green runs from the top of the Eagle Express Quad Chair.
Intermediates may head straight for the new Canadian Rockies Express Quad Chair which in just eight minutes will give you 2000 vertical feet of mostly blue and green runs back down to the base, or find more blue terrain from the Caribou Chair, the Eagle Ridge Quad Chair, and even the Knob Chair.
Advanced skiers and snowboarders will not be disappointed with the selection of black diamond bump runs, chutes and ungroomed bowls found throughout the upper mountain, and the steep treed terrain in the Eagle East area will be challenging even for the experts.
The Terrain Park is conveniently located so that it can be accessed by skiers and riders of all ability levels, and the selection of jumps and rails is better than ever.
Anyone requiring tuition will be impressed by the range of lessons and the quality of instruction offered by the ski and snowboard school, and if you need to rent equipment there is a well equipped rental shop at the base of the ski area.
If you don’t have a car, there is a ski shuttle from all the major hotels, and for a great deal on a hotel in Jasper including ski pass, you may wish to consider a discounted ski package.
Whether you visit for one day or one week, once you’ve been to ski Jasper there’s a very good chance you’ll be back for more!
