Jasper National Park is the world’s second largest Dark Sky Preserve (DSP), and as such is one of the best places, not only in Alberta, but in western Canada for astronomers to observe the night sky.
To celebrate this fact, the Jasper Dark Sky Festival, taking place October 18th to 27th 2019, will see astronomy experts and amateur star gazers descend upon Jasper Alberta for a weekend of workshops, scientific demonstrations, entertaining presentations, and of course as pristine a night sky as an astronomer could hope for.

Hotel Rooms & Packages

October can be a great month for visiting Jasper, with the town and surrounding area being much quieter than during the busy summer season, meaning that some very attractive room rates can be found.
To check rates for several hotels at one time, click here and enter your travel dates.

Special Events 2017

*The event schedule for 2019 is still to be finalized. In the meantime, you can whet your appetites with the following itinerary from the 2017 festival.

Day one of the festival features one of the most unique experiences of the entire program with the Columbia Icefield Stargazing Tour. You will be collected from Jasper and taken to the Columbia Icefield on the Icefields Parkway where a sunset Ice Explorer journey along with canapes on the Athabasca Glacier awaits. After a dinner buffet at Altitude Restaurant astronomers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will help you interpret the night sky from the unrivalled viewpoint on the Glacier Skywalk. This tour departs Jasper at 3.30pm on October 13 and 14 2017 and costs $175 for adults and $109 for children.

Also on the opening evening of the Jasper Dark Sky Festival is a rare opportunity to see jazz legends Tommy Banks and PJ Perry performing live at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge from 7pm on October 13 2017.

New Year’s Eve is a fantastic celebration in all parts of the world, but there is something about being surrounded by snow in the majestic Canadian Rockies that will make New Year 2016-2017 in Jasper difficult to beat. Hotels in Jasper are sure to be busy on December 31 and early reservations are strongly recommended.

Find Accommodations

To check availability and rates for Jasper hotels for New Years 2016-17 or any other dates click here and enter your travel dates.
*Note that if you need a room for December 31 you may have a better chance finding availability for a stay of 2 nights or longer.

Several Jasper accommodations have put together special New Years packages, some of which we have featured below:

Perhaps the widest selection of celebrations and activities can be found at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge where you will find several New Year dinner options, a New Year’s Eve party, and a New Year’s Day brunch. Being Jasper’s largest hotel, this may be your best bet if other accommodations in Jasper are already full.

Marmot Lodge will be hosting a New Year’s Eve Prime Rib Buffet at Embers Steakhouse on December 31st from 5pm-10pm, costing $37 per person. Starters will include a variety of salads, vegetables & dip, and poached salmon, followed by main courses of prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, pan seared shrimp with mango strawberry salsa, scalloped potatoes and vegetables. The Chef’s dessert table will feature Baileys espresso cheesecake, warm chocolate Kahlua pudding with butterscotch sauce, and rum & raisin pie!
Click here to check room availability at Marmot Lodge.

Pyramid Lake Resort is offering a special 5 course 2017 New Year’s Eve Menu on December 31st. Start with beetroot soup followed by an appetizer of scallops with pea puree or breast of quail with pumpkin and goat’s cheese. The entree will be a choice of Alberta AAA beef striploin with creamed kale and duck fat potatoes, or chicken supreme with wild mushroom and leek risotto, or honey mustard roasted eggplant as a vegetarian option. Dessert is just as exciting with either Taste of Apples or white chocolate & cranberry bread pudding.
Click here to check room availability at Pyramid Lake Resort.

*Below you will find details from some of the 2016 festivities, which will be updated for this year in due course*

The Sawridge Inn will also be a special place to spend New Years with Walter’s Dining Room offering a New Year’s Dinner Buffet from 5.30-9.30pm, featuring various types of seafood, a selection of salads, a carvery with Alberta roast beef with mustard jus, catch of the day, mushroom risotto, smoked pork shoulder, plus a choice of desserts including a chocolate fountain with strawberries!
Also at the Sawridge Inn there will be a family New Year’s Eve party from 9pm-1am in Champs Lounge.

No Vacancy ?

If you are struggling to find a vacancy at Jasper hotels for New Year’s Eve, an alternative would be to stay at a hotel in Hinton, approx 75km east of Jasper. The atmosphere may not be quite as festive as in Jasper, but it would give you a reasonable drive into Jasper on New Year’s Day.
To check availability at hotels in Hinton, click here.

Special Celebrations

Many hotels in Jasper will have special New Year’s dinners and celebrations in their own properties, and if you would like to venture out of your hotel and into town, you may be interested in one the following New Year’s Eve events:

New Years Eve Party at the De’d Dog Pub
No Cover
105 Miette Ave
Tel: 780 852 3361

New Year’s Day may be a day of recovery for many, but for those with some energy in reserve, skiing at Marmot Basin would be a great option, or to continue the indulgence, New Year’s Day brunch at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge would be the perfect way to carry on the party.
